In Islamic religion, sheep is one of the most important animals, and their meat is needed for important celebration of Eid Adha. In Jewish culture, sheep also plays important role during the messiah of mosses. Sheep have been human loyal companion and livestock for as long as remember.

 History lesson in the eyes of sheep, how important is sheep in human history?

If we are going to talk about the history of sheep, then it will be long history from the start of hunting and gathering era, agricultural revolution era, bronze age, dark age, renaissance age, age of exploration, modern industrial revolution until this days. Sheep have been quite around with human for a very long time and therefore there is value in studying sheep history. If we want to dwell in sheep history, then we might need to separate our chapters piece by piece.

Hunting and gathering era, then agricultural revolution age

During hunting and gathering era, human lives in caves and their hut. They have nomadic lifestyle, as they move from place to place in search for foods and shelters. During this age, human have no idea on how to domesticate sheep, and sheep will just be mere hunting prey.

During agricultural revolution age, this is where human learn how to domesticate sheep, how to make sheep their livestock and take advantages of it. Human learn on how to make sheep breed, and then they can get more of their milk and juicy meat.

During this age, human have very simple technology like stone hoe and stone tools. They can only farm small herd of sheep as they don’t have required technology and strength to herd lot of sheep in one place. The more sheep they have the more grass pasture they need, so human farmer tend to move a lot, and therefore they have nomadic lifestyle. This is also the roots of many nomadic cultures like Scythian and Mongolians.

Greek, Roman ages and Dark ages

Sheep actually play important role in Greek and Roman culture. Sheep have been tied to many mythological legends such as satyr the loyal servant of Hermes Greek god massager. There is also legends of Chrysomallos a sheep with gleaming golden fleece. Sheep is also important tribute for Roman god, and Roman oracle use sheep fleece, bone and horn in order to predict Roman victory in the battlefield.

During dark ages, where famine and war ravages many countries in Europe, sheep never fail to play its important role, as dependable livestock, companion, and they also provides warmth for many people. Sheep skin is valuable during dark ages for consumption, and also to provide leather for clothing.

Renaissance

During this age, age of renaissance, where people in Europe rediscover Greco-Roman culture, preserving and creating majestic monuments and art work, sheep is always have been important livestock for human. Their leather provides warmth for poor people, and their wool also provides glamorous fashion for many rich people.

Age of exploration

During the age of exploration, where people from Europe compete with each other in other to explore the earth, discover continents, finding gold, and exploring to many uncharted waters, sheep is actually play very important role during this age. Sheep can be bought with sailors in journey for foods, and sheep is also reliable and hardy so sailor won’t have any trouble keeping them for a very long journey.

Columbus bought sheep to America and creating Columbian exchange, and now sheep flourish in many parts of America, creating a chain of sheep industry. Captain James Cook, a British explorer bought sheep to Oceania, especially New Zealand and Australia, making New Zealand is one of the largest sheep industry in the world.

Industrial revolution

During industrial revolution, where human hands and labor turned into machinery, Sheep industry have grown much better. In fact, sheep farming, where there will be only manual labor of grazing and trimming now undertaken by machinery, therefore making more efficiency and effective. Sheep industry have never be better until modern era then.
