Ice Areas Has Decreased, Could Polar Bear Live in Other Habitat?

Global warming was an issue that lead to the destruction of humanity and animal. From health situation to endangered the life existence of some animals – all was triggered by the phenomenon. One particular animal that got the most impact of the climate change was our beautiful creature polar bear. We do all know that polar bear are one of the marine mammals which their life was depended on their habitat – the ice and the sea. Spread in most of polar side of the world (Arctic) polar bear has classified as a threatened species.

So, this makes us wondering, the ice areas has decreased, could polar bear live in other habitat? For now, there is no other habitat that could be the alternative of living places for polar bear. This was because of the importance and the polar bear’s necessities for the Arctic ice an arctic ocean. But, don’t worry, the scientist and the UN organization – particularly the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) has work together along with the governments of countries to solve this urgent situation.

Therefor, now in this article: ice areas has decreased, could polar bear live in other habitat?; we would discuss further more about the polar bear situation and the progress of the conservation planning from the governments and UN (United Nations).

Polar Bear

There is a lot of species that considered as endangered animals all over the world such, Javanese rhino, sea turtle, liger, Bawean deer, orangutan, and right now, the king of ice – the one and only polar bear – was joining the club of endangered species. A male adult Polar bear (ursus maritimus) sized around 350-700 kg (800-1,300 pounds), and length about 6-9 feet, the female was half of the male’s size. The estimate population of Polar bear around the world approximate about 25,000 to 31,000.

With the impact of climate changes which hit them hardly, the status of polar bear have been changed into vulnerable. Polar bear was known as a good swimmer; with the paddling of their front paws and their hind legs, this animal capable to reach six miles per hour of speed. Furthermore, this white creature was hunt their own food, and their mainly diet menu is seals – because they need to supply their body’s needed of a large amount of fat, and seals was the perfect source of fat.

Over thousands of years, Polar bear has become the king of the food chain of the marine environment. They also become a part of the Arctic people’s cultures and economic growth. Polar bear distribution was range in the territory of these five big nations: Alaska (United States), Greenland (Denmark), Russia, Svalbard (Norway), and the last Canada. You have to know my friends, that these five big nations are the nations which responsible of the conservation of Polar Bears on the International Agreement. I already mention above that they work together with the UN organization WWF.

Polar Bear’s Habitat

Perhaps you might confuse, why this bear was classified as the marine mammal? One thing you should know, that Polar bear spends most of the months in a year at the ocean. They intend to come at the areas which where water meet the sea ice, where the most of their diet menu – the seals – was lived. Sea was vital to this big white creature. All of their basic necessities for living was provided by the sea ice and seals, and without them, the Polar bears would leave starving.

With the circumstances like this, would push them to the edge to looking for another option of food source, and one of it would lead them to the dumps of garbage, and human food. One thing for sure, a hungry Polar bear would not take the food politely – which lead to the catastrophe for both side – the human and the polar bear. That is why, the only way to save the polar bear habitat is by minimize the loss of the ice. It’s very hard to relocated the bears because their needed of the large amount of water (substitute for the sea) and the ice.

Most importantly was the ice. Almost every summer the sea ice was decreasing. According to satellite data for over 40 years, this year – 2019 – was the seventh-lowest sea ice cover in the histories of Arctic (this information was based of National Snow and Ice Data Center). This data opened our eyes that this moment of time was a crucial time for the Polar bear. There is a report of starve polar bear start appeared in a such poor (skin and bone) condition.

Conservation Plan for The Polar Bears

The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) had proclaimed that the Polar bear conservation needed a serious responses and more collaborative action. Also, without any serious action for reducing the greenhouse gas emission, unfortunately would predict that in 2050, the world would loss almost the third of the world’s Polar bear populations.

And to addressing the concern of climate changes, the WWF already created worldwide team nationally, regionally, and internationally. Apparently, WWF has advocates the governments to recognize the effects of the climate changes to survival of the polar bear living existence. Also, the WWF has provided financially for every research which support all the matters to expand and stabilized the polar bear habitat.

The organization collaborated with the local people to prevent the oil spills and gas (from industrial) and help them draft a new binding agreement which will keep the Polar bear environment clear. They created the safety communities to separate the polar bear and people, even though we see the Polar bear as cute, fluffy animal – apparently, they were large dangerous predators for the people who live with them.

So, wouldn’t let something bad happen for the people and the bear, WWF decided to the safety material that would protect them from the bear and prevent them for killing the bear, such electric fences and food storage  container which let them store their food without any interference of the bear. No one get hurt and every one is happy.
