Many animals in the world have an outstanding good memory. They can remember things for a long time. Those animals are dogs, elephants, parrots, and dolphins. However, there are also some animals that have bad memory.
You may think that all smart animals have good memory, but it turns out that some smart animals also have poor and short memory.
So, let’s find out these 5 animals with bad memory, no matter how smart they are.
- Chimpanzees
It is surprising that chimpanzees are listed as the animals with bad memory. Though chimpanzees are also considered to be some of smartest animals on earth , but they are not the smartest. They have bad memory.
They are able to solve and understand various complex problems and tasks. They are so intelligent as they have a special part of their brain that is responsible for learning and developing. This part of the brain never stops growing, just similar to humans.
Some researchers have reported that chimpanzees may forget an event even within 20 seconds. This result surprised biologists since they are our closest relatives. Compared to rats, chimpanzees are worse.
- Bees
Bees are known to be able to make collective decisions while they are selecting nectar sources. However, that is not all. There was a recent study at the Queen Mary University of London which explained that bees are intelligent, especially in using tools and learning by observing.
Despite their exceptional abilities, they are also known as animals with pretty bad short memory. In the same conducted studies, bees also have displayed the worst memory of 2.5 seconds. Do you know that there are benefits of using honey bees for gardening?
- Baboons
The next animal which has bad memory is baboon. Being in the list of animals portrayed in the lion king, baboons are extremely smart and they enjoy spending most of their time with their family.
Throughout a lot of experiments, it is shown that baboons were able to understand language and words in sequence. Baboons can also calculate numbers!
Another study also showed a group of baboons did a task to choose between two cups with peanuts. Over 75% of them successfully chose the cups that contained larger quantities of peanuts.
Despite that intelligence, baboons are animals with not-so-great memory. They would forget an event within 15 seconds! That is so short!
- Hamsters
These cute animals are also known to be the animals with bad memory. They are rodents and many people favour them as favourite pets to keep at home. Then, how about their mental capacities and memory?
Unfortunately, they have bad memory! According to the owners, hamsters tend to forget what they were doing in the middle of the action. Their short-term memory is no longer than 3 seconds! Their short-term memory to learn an insignificant piece of information is also terrible.
Not many studies are conducted to show how intelligent hamsters are. However, through patient and consistent training, your hamsters may be able to recognize you and respond to their names.
Hamsters don’t latch on to simply being called a word or a name by their owner every day. So, if you keep a pet hamster at home, you need to use a reward system to stimulate him to respond.
If you have pet hamster at home, make sure you know how to have fun playing with your hamster outdoors.
- Seals
Seals are known to be the intelligent creatures as they can understand words, commands, sign language and even mimic human language and laughter.
They are known to have great long-term memory and it may take one year to learn how to perform a certain trick. However, after three months not performing the trick, they still would remember the trick.
Despite their long-term memory, their short-term memory is not that great. They tend to forget an action after 18 seconds.
Animals’ memory is different from one species to another species. However, when it comes to short-term memory, then there are only a few animals would have good results. Seals and sea lions are different! Find out the differences between seals and sea lions and don’t get them wrong again.
